Tips to prevent basement flooding

Re-Grade the Perimeter

Check your soil and foundation surrounding the perimeter of your home rests on a slight incline to encourage drainage away from the house. By doing so it will encourage drainage away from the house.

Check the basement's sump pump or better yet do you have a sump pump

A Sump pump collects excess water from drains and pumps it out of the pit and away from the house. Not all homes need sump pumps depending if you are more susceptible to flooding.

If you have a sump pump perform routine checks to make sure it is fully operational. They should keep your basement dry in the long wet months and save you from potential water damage.

Downspout

Make sure your downspouts redirect water away from your house. You may be able to get away with an extension on your downspout that keeps water away from your foundation.

Gutter Cleanings

Regular cleaning of your gutter system helps it stay free of debris. If your gutters are not adequately maintained, water will have nowhere to go except over the edges of the system. It could potentially cause water to spill out and drain into the foundations, causing damage potential damage to your home.
